According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women and adolescent girls accounted for just approximately one-quarter of all people living with HIV in the U.S., of whom just 45% were engaged in care and only a third had achieved viral suppression.

Women accounted for 24% (6424) of the estimated new AIDS diagnoses among adults and adolescents in 2013. It is estimated that nearly two-thirds of new infections among women occur among African American women, compared with around 18% for white women and around 15% Hispanic/Latina women.
