UNAIDS: HIV Infections among Children Drop by Half in African Countries

New HIV infections among children by fallen by at least 50% since 2009 in 7 high-prevalence countries in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to improvements in preventing mother-to-child transmission, according to a Global Plan progress report issued this week by UNAIDS.

A large French study has found an elevated risk of some birth defects in children born to women exposed to some antiretroviral drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy, French researchers reported on at the 20th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2013) this month in Atlanta.

A review of clinical records from Central Manchester University Hospitals has found more evidence of an increased rate of preterm delivery of babies born to HIV positive women who are taking antiretroviral therapy (ART), according to a study presented at the 11th International Congress on Drug Therapy in HIV Infection in Glasgow this month.

HIV positive women in high-income countries where clean water and safe baby formula are widely available should avoid breast-feeding -- regardless of antiretroviral therapy (ART) use or low viral load -- in order to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus to their infants, according to a new policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

On the occasion of the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) last week in Washington, DC, the International Antiviral Society-USA (IAS-USA) released new guidelines recommending that all people diagnosed with HIV should be offered antiretroviral therapy (ART).
